Evelyn Pierce Smith, age 77, of Albany, KY passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 6 at Clinton County Care & Rehabilitation Center in Albany after a brief illness. She was a retired craftsperson in the garment industry and a longtime member of Smith's Chapel United Methodist Church.
Evelyn was born on May 25, 1947 in Byrdstown, TN and graduated from Picket County High School in 1965. She was wed to Jackie Smith of Albany on April 6, 1968. The couple moved to Louisville, KY, during which time a son & daughter were born to them, before moving back to Albany in 1974, where they lived until Jackie died suddenly of an inoperable brain aneurysm in 1983. By that time, Evelyn had returned to work after a handful of years as a stay-at-home mom and was employed at Winningham Apparel. Though grief-stricken by the loss of the love of her life, she would continue to persevere, eventually becoming a department supervisor. She would remain at Winningham Apparel until its closing in the nineties and would then go on to work at a number of factories in the area before retiring in her late sixties.
In 1987, Evelyn would meet the second love of her life, Gayle Bowlin of Albany. Though the two never married, they were together until his death in July of 2024.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 15 years Jackie Smith, a daughter Kimberly Smith, her parents Posie Pierce & Ida Gluff Pierce, several siblings and by Gayle Bowlin. She is survived by one son, Jamon Jeffrey Scott of Gatlinburg, TN, and a brother, Bill Pierce of Albany.
The family asks for privacy during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, they ask that you make a donation in Evelyn's name to Shriner's Children’s Hospital or to Feral Feline Friends in Knoxville, TN. Campbell-New Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of arrangements.
